Conventional wisdom regarding the tax treatment of green card holders does not apply to every circumstance. Non-U.S. citizens often obtain green cards (lawful permanent resident status in the U.S., an immigrant versus nonimmigrant visa) with one basic view regarding taxes, that is, while holding the green card, the taxpayer is taxed in the same manner as a U.S. citizen or other resident alien. Immigration and tax advisors alike often hold and communicate this belief. However, it is not always correct and can lead to unintended consequences and missed opportunities for those not properly informed.
