John Steffy is a director in the New York State and Local Tax practice. He has over 14 years of experience working in state and local tax and advising corporate and high-net-worth clients with respect to income/franchise, sales and use, property, employment, and commercial rent taxes.
John specializes in strategic tax planning, M&A due diligence review, audit defense and tax controversy representation, with significant experience on a broad range of tax matters including:
- Income/franchise tax and sales tax nexus reviews
- Unitary business and combined reporting tax planning
- Formulary apportionment and alternative apportionment issues
- Entering and expanding into US markets
His clients span various industries and include financial services providers, private equity & hedge funds, insurance providers (health and property/casualty), advertising and digital marketing firms, multimedia and broadcasting businesses, software companies, and a variety of different digital-technology based startups.
Before joining Andersen, John worked at the New York City Department of Finance as Tax Counsel providing comprehensive legal support for tax and revenue-related matters. He also served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Kings County District Attorney's Office in the Money Laundering & Revenue Crimes Bureau. Prior to focusing on state and local tax, John also served as a legal research and analysis fellow for the American Bar Association - Rule of Law Initiative's Regional Anti-corruption Advisor in Ukraine.
